Minimum Tillage Best Conservation Plowing Advice
Les Vobmert, Work Unit Conservationist, warns that early heavy disking and improper timing increase erosion. He recommends leaving residues, plowing the day before or the same day of planting, and using loose plowed soil for better results. Wheel track planting suits many soils while extra disking causes crusting and runoff. Research shows yields similar with minimum tillage at lower costs and less soil loss, with weeds reduced and higher moisture capacity with proper fertilization. Local Soil Conservation Service offers counseling and the district promotes these practices and support.
