The Commerce Bank of St Charles celebrated its first day at the First Capitol Drive location with an unusual ribbon cutting. Dr. Anthony Brown, president of The Lindenwood Colleges, presided as the scissorsman while Maurice Atkins and others held the $5 bill ribbon securing the grand opening at the modern new structure.
Certificates for the St Charles South Main Street Historic District and several district buildings will be presented in a St. Charles Rotary Club ceremony at the Three Flags. Joseph Jaeger Jr states Parks director will deliver the National Register recognition with his team. The event honors the eight block district, the restored First State Capitol and Stone Row structures, and the Newbill McElhiney house at 615 South Main. Mayor Frank Brockgreitens will receive the certificate for the district. Noel Baker will represent the State Park Board in accepting related honors.
Navy Lieutenant John J. Zerr son of Mr and Mrs Ernest F Zerr of 31 1 Main St Peters is awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross by Rear Admiral Mason Freeman at the Naval Postgraduate School Monterey California Zerr flew a downed pilot mission from USS Hancock in the Western Pacific dodged an enemy missile and led an attack to suppress further fire enabling the rescue of two pilots He is a 1959 Duchesne High School graduate and 1965 Purdue University alumna.
Seven directors were elected to two year terms on the St. Charles Chamber of Commerce board. They join eight holdover directors and four appointive members to form the Chamber’s official 1973 leadership. Elected: William Boschert of First State Bank, Don Garrison of Don’s Service Station, Robert Meers of Ellis-Rodes-Meers Co., Robert Meyer of Don Meyer Real Estate.
