Voters head to the polls tomorrow on the proposed St Charles Fire Protection District. Backers push new tax authority and building codes to improve safety across the county, while opponents warn of annexation costs and long legal battles.
Ten candidates seek city council seats in St Charles for the April 6 election. Harvey R Paneitz of 1107 Easterling Dr campaigns for First Ward with a background in management and accounting and a Sears store role at Northwest Plaza. Milton J Ward Jr of 1021 Wilmington Dr campaigns for Fifth Ward aiming to ensure voters views are heard amid ongoing city growth and cash flow concerns.
The city faces a decision on a 2.4 million bond for a new 28000 square foot police facility adjacent to the City Hall Civic Center. A 22 cent per 100 valuation tax increase is proposed to fund the project amid mixed opinions from councilors and residents. Chief Grimmer and supporters cite space, access, and safety, while critics call the cost excessive and the plan elaborate.
The Journal corrected an error in its March 31 edition about candidate Manuel L. Holt for the Wentzville Board of Education. Holt said he supports approving the budget and hiring a new Superintendent as major issues, but the edition omitted the time reference past 12 months and questioned his hiring answer.
Ken Boschert of 718 Clark and Paris Brown of 1038 Lindenwood did not respond to the Journal questionnaire while seeking election in St. Charles Fourth Ward.
