Death of Bill Hayfield During Arrest in Malta

Bill Hayfield wanted on grand larceny and horse stealing was shot and killed by Deputy Sheriff Cassidy during an arrest attempt last Monday night in Malta. Deputy Cassidy, aided by Powell, confronted Hayfield at the Powell and Brown saloon and when told he was under arrest Hayfield drew his gun. Powell fired first. Cassidy then shot Hayfield, who died at the scene.

Bank Increases Capital At Malta Bank

At a September 12 stockholders meeting the First State Bank of Malta voted to raise capital from 25000 to 50000. The $25000 increase, to be added November 1, makes the bank one of Valley County’s strongest with deposits near 300000. Local stockholders hold most shares, with 25 of 500 owned by outsiders.
