Feeding Clipped Forage Boosts Pasture Carrying Capacity
Iowa State College research shows feeding clipped green forage to beef cattle raises carrying capacity up to two to two and a half times compared with continuous grazing. Nutritionist Wise Burroughs notes protein supplements provide a lift when fed with clipping on grainless pasture but not when grain is absent. On pasture the benefit comes when supplement is fed with grain, likely due to limited corn intake in drylot and grain from a feeder on pasture. Also guidance on raspberry canes: pinch out tips of new shoots when canes reach 30 inches to promote heavy side branching and next year’s fruiting wood.
