Governor Huey Long calls eight day Louisiana session

New Orleans dispatch reports Governor Huey P. Long issued an eight day extraordinary legislative session to start September 16 in Baton Rouge. Nine aims include highway bonds and New Orleans projects such as bridges roads airports and ports as opponents and supporters seek a revised 68 million bond plan.

New Orleans reports a likely contest of J O Fernandez by James O Connor over suspicious St Bernard returns where Fernandez leads 3481 to 250 for Connor in a parish with a 1750 to 1900 poll tax list. The parish census shows 4300 total population yet near four thousand votes.

Meeting Of Eastern Star Chapters In Choudrant

A joint meeting of the Eastern Star chapters of Calhoun and Choudrant will be held with Choudrant chapter No 134 on the evening of September 19. A large Kiwanis luncheon audience heard members and guests relate summer travels joining W L Mitchell dean of men at Louisiana Polytechnic Institute and others from Shreveport Dallas Galveston Memphis Washington DC and Charlottesville The program featured reflections on trips to Kentucky Washington and Lee University and Stone Mountain followed by a vote to visit Hopewell on September 25 with dinner proposed for that community.

Record Cotton Seed Crush Totals for August Fiscal Year Start

Washington reports August cotton seed processing totals from the census bureau. Seed crushed reached 165,770 tons, up from 120,023 a year earlier. On hand at mills August 31 totaled 214,965 tons versus 160,652 a year ago.

Will Urge Naming Of Judge Dawkins To Circuit Court

New Orleans September 13 United States senators from Louisiana will push for the appointment of Federal Judge Ben C Dawkins of the northern district to one of the vacancies on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Richard A Walker will resign this fall creating two openings. The White House has not filled the post though Congress passed a bill for an additional member. Rumors say Judge Joseph Hutchins of Texas is a likely candidate but support favors Judge Williat H Atwell of Texas.

Prominent Nacogdoches Educator Visiting Ruston

Miss Thelma Jagoe head of physical education at Stephen F. Austin State Teachers College in Nacogdoches Texas arrived in Ruston to visit Miss Bernadine McKnight daughter of H L McKnight. Jagoe once served as secretary to the president at the Texas college and also runs a girls summer camp along the White River near Calico Rock Arkansas. She will stay several days.

Bozeman backs Fields in Louisiana race Oct. 13 runoff

Bozeman who fell in the first primary for public service commissioner endorsed Harvey G. Fields incumbent, in the North Louisiana district, after returns from 8 parishes. He urged Fields to press Interstate Commerce Commission for better road rates on sand gravel stone shell and ensure fair lumber truck and dairy pricing from west of the Mississippi to Middle East and Northern markets.

Bulldogs Move LSU Game to Baton Rouge Over Monroe Guarantee

Louisiana Tech will play LSU in Baton Rouge on Sept 27 after Monroe officials failed to guarantee funding for a Monroe site. Tech coach Russ Cohen insisted on Baton Rouge as the original schedule favored LSU. The Bulldogs then plan a Sept 27 game in Baton Rouge, with subsequent plans including a Oct 4 visit to Loyola New Orleans and a home Oct 11 against Magnolia A and M.

Fall Term of Court Opened in Union Seat

Farmerville Sept 15 The fall term of the third district court opened with Judge Pearce of Ruston delivering the charge to the grand jury. He urged careful probes into prohibition and game law violations as A D Everette of Marion was named foreman. A heavy docket awaits next week with criminal cases carried over from the last term. Union Lincoln and Jackson parishes form the district.
