Orchard owners can meet November 19 and 20 with Mr Spurlick to discuss pruning and orchard problems. A lamb sale trip to Alexandria is planned November 12 with several attendees from Hico, Tico, Unionville, Fellowship, Ruston, and Ruston. VFW Post To Honor Henry G. Riser At Supper

Commander Jeff Lain announces Parnell-Burt Post 3615 will host a 7 pm meeting followed by a free supper honoring Henry G. Riser for a three year term on the VFW National Home board of trustees. Riser is also elected vice president of the home and a management committee member. He recently served on the district trustees for the new District No 5 covering Alabama Arkansas Kentucky Tennessee and Mississippi. State and national VFW leaders invite all members to attend.

Hico School Week Mixed with Sports and Mischief

Mrs Skinner missed days due to family tragedy and substitute teacher Mrs Halstead covered. Students elected Shirley Twenry captain and Patsy Foster co captain of the girls basketball team. They toured the Singing Sergeants and the United States Air Force Band in Ruston. Seniors got new pinsmacher, and a prank soap tampering incident left the building sudsy after Halloween. The girls lost a Friday game at Summerfield while the boys won their match, described as exciting.

Tech Student Rated Superior In Annual Ala Speech Event

An Alabama Discussion Conference finals at the University of Alabama closed November 3 with the top rating of superior awarded to Wilson of LSU and McLean of Louisiana Tech among 167 participants. Eight earned superior and sixteen earned excellent in the intercollegiate event on the topic of direct economic aid to foreign countries.

Four Tech Faculty Members Attend Language Meeting

Four members of Louisiana Tech's English and foreign languages department attended the annual South Central Modern Language Association convention in New Orleans. Delegates included Mrs J Folk Miss Frances Fletcher Ward Jones and Dr One Richard. Dr Richard presided at a French meeting while Miss Fletcher served as secretary of the South Central College English Association and was elected president for the coming year. Tulane University hosted the event.

W. E. Hogan Rites Held At Long Straw Baptist Church

Funeral services for W. E. Lige Hogan age 89 of Choudrant were held at Long Straw Baptist Church with Rev. A. E. Brown and Rev. J. C. McCane officiating. Burial followed in Long Straw Cemetery. Hogan, lifelong Lincoln Parish resident, died Sunday after a long illness. He is survived by five daughters including Louise Hogan and Ruth Emory, three sons including H. J. Hogan of Bryan Texas and Dub Hogan of Dallas, one sister Fannie Croxton and one brother O. W. Touan, and many grandchildren.

New Hope Event Brings 40 To Social at BV Griffin Home

The Young People and Intermediate departments of the New Hope Baptist Church hosted a social Saturday at the Griffin home for Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Griffin. About 40 attendees enjoyed games and refreshments including cakes cookies potato chips and hot dogs. Miss Ella Jane Shields of Mon- was present.

Bernice Man Cited for Heroism in Fire Threatening Train

William W. Luck Jr of Bernice a former postal employee received a Post Office Department citation and token cash award for heroism after a jet fuel truck crashed into L A Train No 4 near Cotton Valley La on June 14 1955. Luck acted to combat the blaze and save the mail car and potentially other cars in the train.

Cunningham Wins Football Forecast After Nine-Way Tie

D V Cunningham of 1505 Davis Blvd won the Football Forecast contest by correctly predicting Louisiana Tech’s six point win. He received 100 dollars and a chance at the grand prize. Contest entries start Tuesday with forms from Hammock's Service Station and ten local merchants.
