Wildlife Phase Soil Conservation Plan Details
The Soil Conservation Service outlines three practices under the Conservation Reserve program. Practice 1 supports pine planting with game crops on wildlife plots. plots must be 5-10 percent of the area and 30 to 100 yards apart. Practice 2, Water and Marsh Management, targets ducks but is hard to qualify in this parish. Practice 3, Dams or Ponds for Fish, also requires qualification in cultivated CR land. Federal cost sharing applies when overseen by a Soil Conservation Service representative. Don Spencer warns few places may qualify but urges eligible farmers to learn the program.

Clear Lake to be a fish sanctuary in Richland Parish
The Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission declared Clear Lake in Richland Parish a fish sanctuary until further notice. Biologists have reduced rough fish from 95 percent to about 70 percent and plan ongoing selective removal of shad. After September 1 fishing will be by permit only under supervision. permits require return and consent to check catches. Fishing remains allowed until sanctuary supervision is ready.
