Edmond W. Pettus, Alabama Democratic chairman, refused to accept US Senator J. Thomas Heflin's candidacy for another term in the August 12 primary. Pettus cited failure to meet anti fraud and qualification requirements, noting Heflin did not clearly deny Republican presidential support or publicly oppose Democratic nominees in 1928. Something New In Cotton Planting Promises Savings

Cotton farmers report major labor and seed savings with Avery planters using the Full-Drop and Huy-Drop features. The new method eliminates chopping and reduces seed use by up to 100 percent and 50 to 70 percent respectively, while improving stand and yields. One worker can chop an acre per day, a large labor saving on 89 to 100 acre plantations, with profits rising as costs fall. Further reports from farmers praise the automatic planting device and hills-only seeding, with expanded adoption expected this season.
