Gold Star Mothers to Visit European War Graves

Louisiana will send more than 300 gold star mothers and widows to Europe to visit graves of sons and husbands killed in World War I. The Wood resolution allocates 5.386 million dollars for the two week pilgrimage to eight war cemeteries in Belgium England and France with all expenses covered by the government. Only those with abroad burials qualify and mothers whose sons were later repatriated do not vote for the trip.

Ouachita Parish May Abandon Tick Eradication Fight

The Ouachita Parish police jury discussed ending local tick control unless a statewide eradication law passes. Henry Rogers urged stricter enforcement of dipping requirements and proposed appointing a guardian to prevent cattle tick importation into the parish.

The president was thanked for his stance on the London conference and naval armament limits and for supporting the class work. A resolution praised Hoover and endorsed the class officers and their efforts.

Baton Rouge Feb 6 Resignations of three lawmakers from highway and penitentiary posts accompanied by a pledge that all legislators with executive branch appointments will resign. Senator James L Anderson announced his resignation to Governor Lane as part of a sweeping move affecting 16 appointees to end further injunction suits.

Warden Steckler Told to Leave Post by State Officials

McClanahan reports that officials viewed appointive posts in the legislature as unconstitutional. Governor Long urged Steckler to stay by offering to pay his salary, but Steckler declined. The warden agreed to visit penitentiary staff periodically without compensation. Dugas confirms Steckler’s acting warden appointment and governor’s sanction. Steckler led the office detail for nine months.
