New Orleans Would Benefit From Canal Across North Florida
New Orleans, La. Dec 28 The engineering firm Hill a Youngberg completed a survey on a proposed ship canal across North Florida. The plan would cut sailing times from New Orleans to New York by four to five days, to Jacksonville by three days, to the English Channel by three days, and to the Strait of Gibraltar by about two and a quarter days. A 6,000 ton steamer could carry cargo at a cost of 0.5 percent per ton mile via the canal. Estimated annual savings include 286,000 on cargo insurance premiums and 202,000 on gasoline evaporation losses, with total marine insurance savings near 12,000,000 annually.
