Farm efficiency cited as shield against Cold War strain

Dr J Norman Jefferson, dean at State University College of Agriculture, argues American agriculture sustains the nation and can supply the 90 percent not on farms with the best diet in history. He notes advances in farming free workers for business, industry, and military service, contrasting with Russia where most workers toil in farming. A large war would strain Soviet food supplies and underline agriculture as America’s key asset.

Quitting High School Costly Financially

A U S Department of Labor study on early work experience of 1952 to 1957 high school dropouts and graduates shows dropouts earn less and face higher unemployment. Among 4000 youths in seven communities, 15 percent of boy dropouts earned under 40 a week versus 2 percent of graduates. 31 percent of graduates earned 80 or more weekly, only 20 percent of dropouts. For girls, nearly 40 percent of dropouts earned under 40, while about 14 percent of graduates did.

Teaching Media Takes Center Stage at Tech Leadership Conference

A regional leadership conference on newer media of teaching is set for February at Louisiana Tech in Howard Auditorium. Sponsored by the college, the State Department of Education, and the Louisiana Steering Committee, the event expects 300 to 400 participants from 16 parishes. The lineup features demonstrations of audio visual materials, a foreign language machine, and sessions led by Tech and Lake Charles leaders with an agenda running from 8 to 3:45 p.m.

Mrs J H Rhodes 94 died Sunday at Spearsville. Funeral 2 p.m. Monday at New Hope Primitive Baptist church with Elder Spears and Elder Smith officiating. Burial under Kilpatrick funeral home at New Hope cemetery. Survived by over 200 living descendants including 62 grandchildren.

Civil Service Reveals 742 Area Employes

There were 742 State employees in Lincoln Parish classified under Civil Service during the last reported fiscal year. Applicants should apply to the Department of Civil Service, Baton Rouge, Louisiana for jobs of their choice before vacancies occur. Ruston Chamber Names Ten New Board Members

Ruston Chamber elects ten new directors for two year terms to replace outgoing members at the Diamond Inn meeting. New directors include James L. Benaird and D. C. DuBois, among others, with ongoing terms listed for current directors. Funds for the Louisiana Peach Festival were discussed as needs near $3,500 to support the Lincoln parish event, with Queen and Pageant costs noted and plans to attract a notable personality to the festival. Diamond Industries highlighted as the largest broom and mop handle maker, employing 85 workers to produce 1,250,000 handles, with 23 operations and automatic plant processes.

Bobby Sims Wins Freedom Speech Award in Lincoln Parish

Bobby Sims, a Ruston High School senior, won the Voice of Democracy contest in Lincoln Parish as part of a national competition sponsored by the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters. Winners advance from school to state to national levels, with a Washington trip for the top claimant and several prizes.
