Ruston Chamber hosts drought relief meeting for farmers

Sixty business and professional men attended a Ruston chamber of commerce call meeting to review drought relief plans by the farm council. President A H Henderson outlined farm bureau efforts stressing self help, rye planting for winter pastures, and fall cuts for early spring feed. Committees were named to pursue relief work before the Police Jury and Louisiana Highway Commission, including feed location and tie and pulpwood contracts. A Monroe syrup shipment was noted.

Louisiana crop conditions on August 1 1930 stood at 54 percent of a normal peak, with an indicated lint yield of 150 pounds per acre and production around 6,320,000 bales of 500 pounds gross. The acreage planted and standing was about 2,071,000 acres, vs 2,135,000 in 1929 and 2,062,000 in 1928, with a 10 year planted average near 1.831 million.

Oakland cuts price on Oakland Eight and Pontiac Six

Oakland becomes the lowest priced eight on the market as Oakland and Pontiac price cuts take effect. Kavanaugh Motor Co on behalf of Oakland Motor Car Co announces base prices reduced from 1045 to 895 for Oakland Eight and from 745 to 665 for Pontiac Six with larger cuts on some body types. New prices listed for Coupe, 2-Door, Roadster, 4-Door, Sport Coupe and Custom models.

New Cottonseed Figures Released by Census Bureau

Washington August 15 Cottonseed crushed in the year August 1 last through July 31 this year totaled 5 014 562 tons down from 5 601 058 tons the previous year. On hand at mills July 21 stood 44 606 tons up from 41 606. Crude oil produced 1 572 059 267 pounds versus 1 604 131 038. on hand 8 110 407 pounds versus 1 181 886. Refined oil produced 1 410 641 411 pounds down from 1 458 537 594. on hand 29 933 070 pounds up from 338 619 993. Cake and meal produced 2 231 682 tons down from 2 281 576 with on hand 54 308 pounds down from 76 667.

Chicago August 13 A state referendum on prohibition appears assured as a petition to place the question on the fall ballot was mailed to the secretary of state. Bernard W Now chairs the Cook County Republican central committee and the petition cites repeal of the Wh amendment modification of the act and repeal of state prohibition law. Hitch Hiker Sentenced to Life for Webb Murder in Mississippi

Leonard V. Thompson, 22, Shawnee Oklahoma, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life in the Mississippi penitentiary for killing Frank A. Webb, New Orleans timber inspector. The jury deliberated 30 minutes after Thompson testified he acted in self defense during a quarrel over a drink on the old Spanish Trail highway. Thompson’s bride, Lucy McKinley of Perdido Alabama, cried in court as the verdict was announced.
