President G W Bond announced two summer sessions at Loticiana Tech after state officials approved an extra 23595 to restore funds. Registration for the first six weeks begins June 12 and runs to July 11, while the second six weeks runs from July 1 to August 22.
A Arcadia jury returned a not guilty verdict Wednesday afternoon in the manslaughter trial of Jim Roberson connected with the killing of Val Garrett last January. Roberson cried as the verdict was read, claiming he shot Garrett during a dispute over whiskey at the power plant where they worked. The defense said Garrett rushed him and Roberson believed a knife was present. Garrett reportedly grabbed a pistol and fired four shots. The prosecutor argued Garrett was shot in the back, but jurors deliberated about an hour and a half before acquitting Roberson.
Inspectors under the state department of education approved five Lincoln parish elementary schools including the Tech training school Eastland Hillcrest Rus ton and the Dubach and Hico sites. Miss Helene Sliffe cited near term readiness for additional schools while noting notable vaccination context and current smallpox trends.
At least five parish schools including Hico Hillcrest Greenville Bastand and Tall plan to observe Child Health Day on May 1. Dr. R H Allen, parish public health director, asks each school to devote ten minutes next Friday to a health program with literature and plays available at the parish health unit.
Beaumont arrest tied Yarrell to Lecompte robbery last Saturday afternoon. He also admits Logansport bank thefts and a Texas prison escape. Authorities identify him as Hunter B. Watson, with total loot around $60,000. Wife, a sixteen year old claimed bride, cleared of blame. Yarrell held in Union Parish awaiting October trial.
Funeral services for H. D. Hedgepeth 32 assistant superintendent on Lincoln parish road work were scheduled for two o clock this afternoon at the Choudrant Baptist church. He was killed when dynamite exploded as he re lighted a fuse on a road job between Hiro and Dubach. Interment followed at St Rest cemetery with local undertakers directing and pallbearers named.
Homer will build a municipal natatorium after town council discussions. A site north of the grammar school has been acquired and the pool will be financed by the light and power plant funds, with no extra tax levied on residents.
Mrs Eugenia Russ May 73 died at home on West Georgia Street after a period of illness. She was the eldest of twelve children of Robert L Russ, Ruston founder, and was married to Winnfield Beatt May. Surviving are daughters, brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews. Funeral at 4 PM from the residence with Rev W C Bost officiating. Greenwood Cemetery interment.
Mrs. Mary Catherine Thurmon aged 74 died at 1 am at the home of her son Dr. John Thurmon 505 North Trenton Street after sudden illness. A longtime Ruston resident born in New Orleans, she was a devout Methodist and mother of ten, with survivors including family in Ruston Longview Seary Arkansas and Monroe. Funeral services at Mrs Cook’s residence on North Vienna Street conducted by Rev H M Johnson, Greenwood Cemetery interment. Pallbearers listed with active and honorary names.
Miss Anna Thtse of Louisiana Tech Home Economics visits twenty one high schools near Ruston to observe classes and address special problems. The trips, part of Miss Clyde Mobley’s plan under the George Reed Act, aim to improve Tech graduates who teach in state schools. Locations include Chaudrant and Gibsland with future stops planned in Linville and Marion Union Parish.
The Empire State Building, the world’s tallest structure and largest office building, opens to tenants and the public on May 2 1931. A ceremonial program begins May 1 at noon with President Hoover Governor Roosevelt and Mayor Walker attending along with Alfred E Smith and Empire State Inc officers.
Jim Yarrell eighteen sentence nine to fourteen years for bank robbery and manslaughter related case. Court reports he made no statement. Nearby Alexandria grand jury indicts Yarrell for Lecompte bank robbery. he likely faces penitentiary term. Holloway to appeal. juries drawn for Lim Cullen murder case.
Morehouse parish officials announced bids will be advertised Tuesday for 9.9 miles of paving on the Bastrop Mer Rouge road. Work on the Eastrop Monroe highway has progressed for months and the upper end of a 106 mile route is nearing completion. A bridge over the Ouachita River at Sterlington is slated to begin after next week’s contract award.
Funeral services for GA Colvin a noted Lincoln Parish farmer who died at his home near Dubach after an Weart attack were held at Dubach Baptist Church with Rev. Jor Hinkie and Rev. G C Young presiding. Interment in Unierville cemetery under B F Molare undertakers. Survived by widow, two sons Rue and Little Colvin, one daughter Nora Colvin and three sisters Edith O Nea l Pearl Lowery and Tiny Scaife.
Ward Marshal J D T Richardson found two pairs of shoes in a pine grove beside the Dubach road after pursuing a group of negroes. Two suspects fled, two pairs left as souvenirs. The marshal plans to return the footwear to rightful owners who may post bond for court appearances.
W J Hartley a 51 year old man from Meridian Mississippi collapsed with a heart attack Tuesday while appealing to Mayor Falmer for help in Shreveport. He died Thursday at a local sanitarium and his body is held at McGook Brothers Funeral Home awaiting funeral arrangements.
Dr. R. Clay writes from Ruston La April 24 1931 praising the Leader for switching to a higher quality paper. He notes readers and optometrists will benefit from clearer text reducing eye strain and conserving eyesight and nerve energy. He commends publisher C E Faulk Jr for the change and other improvements.
In Baton Rouge on April 23 two LSU faculty members Dr Charles W Pipkin and Prof G L Garcett join a national committee to judge the fifth annual League of Nations high school essay contest. Tulane and Centenary professors also serve. A state prize in money awaits the winner. the national first prize offers a free trip to Europe.
