Veteran speech notes French rationing and trench life with coarser black bread, contrasting it with American expectations and urging self reliance while criticizing government controls on food.
W H Eikenberry bought Auburn’s first automobile and drove it home becoming the township’s first owner. Cement walk from Ratcliff Tailor Shop to Clover Leaf depot contracted to Mr Taylor Coons of Frankfort with two assistants replacing the old trestle and board walk. A Knights of Pythias division formed under Vice Chancellor Wilson of Elkhart. A thief entered W E Iles drug store stealing cigars a 22 caliber revolver and watches from Elk and A P Woods. The new M E Church was being plastered.
Auxiliary members and workers waited for two weeks as twelve bathrobes were collected this week. Thirty ladies worked today at the school house sewing sponges for hospital work, with sixteen from New London joining yesterday. One thousand eight hundred sixty sponges were made in two days under instructors Mrs Hart and Mrs Holman. Emma Wheeler of Camp Jackson South Carolina spoke on her YWCA hostess duties.
Russiaville church announces Sunday activities led by Rev. J. W. Parr. Sunday school at 9:45 a.m. preaching at 11:00 a.m. evening services at 7:00 p.m. prayer meeting Thursdays at 7 p.m. intermediate Christian Endeavor Sunday 5:00 p.m. junior Endeavor 6:00 p.m. all welcome.
The community reports haymaking and harvest prep in Shanghai while residents visit family and friends across nearby towns. Notable notes include George Fitch’s trip near Cutler, Roy Wood’s family visits, and a Lafayette family reunion. The Shanghai Threshing Company formed plans for the season, adding members and acres, with stricter regulations to meet government grain conservation. Children’s Day Exercises are planned for Cloverdale, and local travel includes trips to Ko komo and Atlanta. George Ebbert from Fort Sill is home on furlough. Pleasant Run school may close, sending students to New London or Burlington next winter.
R. S. P. Hollingsworth and wife Cappy Hollingsworth and family Benny Hollingsworth and family John T. Gifford and wife George Kinder and wife of Russiaville J. W. Kinder and daughter of Forest attended the funeral of Mrs. Isaac Jolingsworth at Kokomo yesterday afternoon.
Notices announce a Friday June 28 meeting of loyal citizens at the Russiaville school house to conclude the competition for selling War Savings Stamps. Attendance urged at 7:80 o'clock.
Miss Opal Hollett of the Masonic Home at Franklin is visiting friends here.
The M. E. Church invites members and others to Sunday School at 10:00 A M and preaching services each Sunday. A prayer service is held every Thursday. Rev Geo W Martin is the pastor and welcomes all to the church services.
