Russell Women’s Institute held its November meeting at Mrs George Simms home on Thursday the 18th with 14 members and three visitors. Mrs S Stevens presided. Roll call praised a Christmas gift donation for the Children’s Aid Society in Brandon. The parcel will be packed by a committee of Mrs B Stevens, Mrs G Robinson and Miss M Bily. Reports of secretary and treasurer were read and approved and the correspondence read. Tweedsmuir Competition seeks a display of handwork in Macmare judged at the annual convention. It was learned that 26000 was realized from book sales at the Book Mart Polo Park Winnipeg last May for the Children’s Hospital. Mrs R Halwas reported on the District Board meeting held September 27. One outcome discussed promoted honey as a health food. There was talk of fundraising via a spring bake sale.
The Ma nitoba District of the Lutheran Church in America held its annual meeting in Salis on November 1–2. Delegates discussed church membership, annual rolls, and evangelism methods after a session titled The Fellowship of Barnabas. A film Like a Mighty Army sparked debate on fear as a tool for outreach.
A Thursday meeting of local residents and government staff in Russell considered creating a Community Information Service to locate officials for pension issues and act as an employment aid within the community. Bill Martin was named coordinator, with social services personnel ready to assist on request.
