Trophies Awarded At Speech Festival

At the North Western Marquette festival held November 2 to 5 in Birtle Collegiate theatre, 496 entries were judged by Mrs. Ann Dyer of Winnipeg. Friday’s final session awarded Public Speaking to Fashion Shoppe Shield winner Abigail Fulton of Birtle and Kiwanis Trophy to Jennifer, with numerous names listed for Grade levels and poetry and choir categories across Foxwarren Russell Birtle and nearby communities.

Rural council backs budget and staffing for 1971 72

The Council of RM Russell held its regular meeting on Tuesday November 9 1971 with Reeve Collins presiding. Social assistance of twenty dollars per week was granted to Mrs Thomas Fleury. Manitoba bounty reinstatement sought for predatory animal control. A 1972 provincial employment program grant application was made to cover labour costs up to five thousand eight hundred dollars. Grader blades bought from Powell Equipment at thirteen hundred fifty four dollars for 8 ft and seven hundred eighty two dollars less 5 percent for 7 ft blades. Six 1400 x 24 12 ply nylon tubeless grader tires bought from Dunlop Canada Limited at one hundred eighty two dollars each. Accounts totaling forty three thousand eight hundred eighty dollars and seventy eight cents approved. Council adjourned to meet November 10 1971. The first meeting of the new council year began November 10 with six councillors and reeve taking office. Frank Bily appointed to council to meet again December 14 1971.

Russell Remembers Veterans With Remembrance Day Service

Russell held a Remembrance Day service in Memorial Hall with the Russell Legion, Legion Auxiliary, and local Air Cadets in attendance. Rev C H Sells led the service joined by Father M Cooney, as Rev Don Robertson gave the address. Wreaths were laid by Mrs Lillian Glasman, Mrs Mervyn Stevens, Legion President Joe Shipp, and Mayor J A Burgess. A two minute silence followed the Last Post and Reveille with hymns Abide With Me and Onward Christian Soldiers. God Save The Queen closed the service.
