CSP plans to close the Harrowby and Saskatoon crushing plants, lay off over 100 workers, and review closure dates at a December 2 board meeting. Excess global oilseed supply and cheap American soybeans drive the move, with subsidies and freight costs complicating stay options.
The Rural Municipality of Russell council on November 9 discussed rising education costs and the inadequacy of property tax to fund schools. They passed a resolution for an open ratepayer meeting on school taxes, inviting nearby towns and the Pelly Trail School Division Board, and considered chairing this meeting with Roy Cusitar.
Canada Post Corporation seeks to raise basic letter rates to 32 cents from 30, with US mail at 37 cents and other countries at 64 cents. Large-volume mailers get tiered rates from 20 to 28.5 cents, effective January 18. A 23 cent minimum rate for 250 items targets municipalities and utilities, while a 37 cent special rate applies to certain commercial mail.
The Russell Town Council discussed continuing Manitoba Hydro free energy for decorative lighting from Dec 18 to Jan 9, 1983 with a rate of 60 cents per kilowatt per night. They approved deferment of a $2,000 rent bill for the ll arena and planned an open meeting for rate payers on Nov 29 or 30. They scheduled a Christmas party for town employees on Dec 12 with Dec 19 as backup. The 50th anniversary parade of Riding Mountain National Park may be joined on July 24, 1988.
Manitoba nurses start talks today seeking higher pay. MONA and MHO convene at a central table to renew 59 contracts with separate tables for other locals. Contracts in 69 of 74 locals expire December 31 1982. RNs LPNs RPNs and OR techs covered. Irene Giesrecht cites provincial economic restraint in urging deals.
Memorial Day service in Russell Manitoba November 11 tribute to war dead drew about 150 attendees led by colour parade of 29 Legionaires and 19 Air Cadets. Mayor Jim Langford MLA Wally McKenzie and other dignitaries attended as Rev Ray McMullan and Father Vince Herner presided. A two minute silence prayers and hymns followed, with pianist Nelliene Leifer and bugler Hilda Nitenhauber. wreaths were laid by Elgin Wishart Mayor Langford and Wally McKenzie and others. Wreaths and a lunch by Ladies Auxiliary concluded the event at Memorial Hall and club rooms.
