Retail Trade in the 1800s and Early Canadian Commerce
The article surveys 1800 era merchants in Montreal and Toronto, noting Benaiah Gibb’s land and tailor shop on St James Street, Abner Miles’ diversified trades, and credit practices evidenced in old day books. It describes goods shipped via Grand Portage to northern trading posts, listing items such as coats caps robes loggins and silks, alongside calico and beets shoes. It contrasts past trade with Canada’s 20th century growth, highlighting expanding interprovincial and foreign trade totals and the nation’s developing natural resources.
