Thrift Shop recounts decades of community service and moves
The United Church Women started the Thrift Shop in 1970 to support overseas aid programs phased out, with early operations in the Russell Council Chambers Annex. It details relocations from hardware store sheds to garages and a shop above a store, ending in a 1979 move to the present location. Financials show rising annual sales, and donations supported the Russell Hospital ambulance fund, libraries, and health charities. A shipment of 37 boxes of clothing to Winnipeg’s Unitarian Service Committee is noted with thanks to Bicknell’s Transfer. Dr Hitschmanova’s remarks contrast Canadian privilege with conditions in Asia and Africa, underscoring donor impact.
