Manitoba Budget Highlights and Tax Hikes Reported

Manitoba faces a record deficit projection of 578.9 million dollars as the budget raises taxes and introduces a new revenue plan. Town council approves taxicab fares in Russell

Russell town council set taxicab rates including within town trips at 3.50, return trips at 4.50, wait time 0.50 per minute after five exempt minutes, extra stop 0.50, freight 1.00, and empty bottles 10 per dozen. They approved Howald Moore for Russell Taxi for the year starting March 1, 1963, and scheduled a May 9 tax sale and a 1988 grant program.

Vehicles Must Display Two License Plates Under Act

The Highway Traffic Act requires every motor vehicle to have two plates, one on the front and one on the back. Front plate must sit within the headlamp height, while the rear plate must indicate the year of issue. Russell Highway Patrol will stop violators. Russell RCMP note a Valentines Dance was a success and warn another dance is planned.

Carol Fleury and board approve education award and mill rate review

The Pelly Trail School Board details a motion by Bidochka-Clement to have the Finance Committee examine Ways and Means to reduce the 1988 special mill rate. A second motion authorizes Les Andrew to review the Step Program and proceed with a hire to advance an application. The meeting date is set for March 14.
