The government passed a law prohibiting import of more than 200 litres of bulk fuel with penalties including seizure, fines up to 1500 dollars, and possible jail time. Violations could trigger double tax payment and mandatory reporting to RCMP.
Premier Howard Pawley, speaking at the Prairie Provinces Tax Conference in Winnipeg, endorses a negotiated three month delay in the 1983 14 wage increase and a plan aimed at boosting employment. He cites a national unemployment crisis, argues for mobilizing resources, and says the agreement could save about 10 million in planned costs while benefiting lower income workers.
On November 28 1982 Glen Cook of Binscarth and Dwain Mushumanski of Birtle left Ottawa for Saudi Arabia under a government program organized by Bob Kelly president of Interimco to assist with seed crop work. They describe meals culture and driving rules with observations on local life and safety. They returned home January 23 and plan another trip April 18.
NFU region director Goldwyn Jones says Transport Minister Pepin’s Crow change would raise freight costs and threaten farmers. He warns costs could rise from current levels to over 1 billion by 1990, eroding farm income and rural competitiveness.
The Pelly Trail school division held its annual meeting at Oakburn on February 15 where long service pins were presented by Rex Virtue of the Manitoba Teachers Society. Recipients included many staff with 10 to 25 year milestones and a few with 22 to 25 years of service.
Ms Dolin said the expanded Employment Action Program drew strong interest from business and non profit groups. Employers can hire while funding covers half the hourly rate up to eight dollars plus a ten percent employee benefit. Referrals continue until 1,700 positions are filled, with extra eight point six million reallocated from other programs.
