The AUSGELL AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY with the Women's Institute proposes turning a four acre bluff at the fairgrounds north end into a shaded park with central clearing, grassed avenues, lilac borders, sheltered seating, and booths. Local volunteers are urged to help next Friday at 1.30 with axes and tools as planting begins next spring and Arbor Day shrubbery is gathered.
Local readers are invited to inspect the recently graded gravel section of the lake drive road after last weekend's rough surface encounter. Work crews welcome comments and are ready for public viewing times.
The Russell council met with all members present. They approved road survey work for sections 8 19 28 and 12 19 29, with plans to start this summer and discussed by law 265 keeper reports. Tax sale titles were postponed to December 1st for specified parcels. right of way requests and various accounts were reviewed.
The postponed event took place Monday evening June 15 in the church with local talent providing the program. Miss Hazel Vandecar gave an address about her Canada trip with teachers to Great Britain, France and Flanders. Mrs Burgess visits Winnipeg. Dr and Mrs Lewis attended a medical convention at Wirden. Angusville stores close at 1 PM each Thursday. Angusville beat Foxwarren 8 to 4 at the baseball grounds Friday. WMS sent eggs and home cooking to Robertson Fresh Air Camp.
After the service in the lodge room Mr Middleton was tendered a vote of thanks for his able and helpful address.
The regular meeting of the W A will be at Mrs J L Bryant’s home on Thursday July 2 at 3 pm with all ladies invited. The W A Garden Party occurs on the grounds of Mr and Mrs D A Goodbun on Tuesday July 7 with full details in the next issue.
A cooperative shipment of hogs and cattle is arranged for next Monday June 29. If you have items to sell call the secretary Earle Keating before that day. The note promotes joining the cooperative to cut out middleman profits and gain benefits of membership.
The barn dance hosted by Mr. F. Wondrasek featured music by the Bavelaw Orchestra and drew a large crowd from near and far. Mrs. H. Hurst and daughter of Shoal Lake stayed with Mr. Edmunds briefly. Mr. Wondrasek travels to the city for medical treatment. Miss Ivy Sparling returned home after several months in Winnipeg.
The church holds Holy Communion and a sermon at 3 p.m. on the third Sunday after Trinity. After the service a Church Vestry meeting will be held.
Russell Masonic Lodge held a Sunday evening parade and service at Union Church in Manitoba to mark the order’s jubilee. Rev. F. C. Middleton delivered a sermon tracing the Grand Lodge of Manitoba from 1875 to today and spoke on masonry’s role in community life and its fraternal fellowship.
All parents and others are invited to the Annual Prize on Tuesday at 3 39 p.m. The Russell town Band will play on the school lawns. The program starts at 1 30 p.m. with tennis finals and classroom openings. The main prize day with the Principal's report and prize distribution follows at 3 30 p.m.
On Sunday after Trinity a Choral Eucharist at 11 am includes Sunday School instruction and a Sermon. Evensong at 7 pm features an address on the First Beatitude. Junior confirmation class noted. At a recent Vestry meeting the Church Building Fund was reopened to fund renovations. A Garden Party at Mrs Doig's residence is planned for next Saturday evening.
Arrangements were made to send an annual donation of eggs to Gimli Fresh Air Camps but weather and time limited shipments. One crate was sent to Presbyterian Camp and organizers extended the deadline to Saturday for the second crate. Donations may be left at Mrs. P. Houck. The Ladies Aid Society planned refreshment booths for the fair and presented Mrs. Middleton with a jewel case of pearls for three years of service. The pastor received gifts, and a surprise party with gifts followed for Thelma Middleton and Bruce. The church prepared for a preparatory service Friday and a reception for new members, with close of pastor’s ministry on Sunday. Rev. D. D. Millar accepted from Kitchonan to Russell Union Church, first sermon July 26, and July services noted.
A six year old black gelding with a white face and light colored feet is missing. The animal weighs about 1950 pounds. Anyone with information should contact J. B. Hilbert, Box 18, Burzell 12p.
Local notes list Shellmouth Fair and Russell Fair dates, business moves, social visits, and community events. N R Parx expands jewellery in Russell while the Russell Band rehearses for summer and fall shows. The Banner marks 25 years with historical notes on local business leaders and changes.
Binscarth enjoyed ideal weather last Thursday for a field day that featured horse racing athletics and a baseball tournament with ten teams. Russell and Solsgirth placed first and second with Agusville third as Ed Wellman refereed big league style. Winners included Senior Ball boys Binscarth Foxwarren Russell, Junior Girls Baseball Russell Bin scarth, 13 and under boys Binscarth Foxwarren, senior mixed teams Bin scarth Foxwarren, and senior and junior basketball titles for Foxwarren and Binscarth.
On Monday June 8 at the Richardson home Rev. D. Gardner of Shellmouth baptized two grandchildren. Mervyn Stuart son of May Richardson and Roy Kelly of Roblin, and Isobel May daughter of Helen Richardson and John Hamilton of Solegirth. Guests included Mrs. T. Kelly and Mrs. J. Skinner.
