Birdtail Sioux parents clash with council over $800000 debt
Birdtail Sioux parents demand answers from Chief Kenneth Chalmers after learning the band owes $800000 to Park West School Division. They burned copies of the Indian Act in front of the locked band office, saying the council’s refusal to pay undermines the school of choice option for about 77 students who previously attended Birtle. The chief says the debt figure is disputed and the band is withholding payments to settle the dispute. Cont. on page 17.
