Lygus Bug Generations Threaten Canola Yields in Manitoba
A four year study by Dr. George H. Gerber and Ian Wise at Winnipeg Research Centre finds three Lygus species injure Manitoba canola. L. lineolaris shows two non overlapping generations, with only the second in canola. Overwintered adults migrate in May, first generation nymphs appear late May to July, and second generation nymphs emerge late July to August. Large second generation populations during pod development can cut yields. Control depends on sampling. pesticides at bud and flower stages disrupt pollinators and affect only a small portion of the population.
