Nominations Named in Each Constituency for June Ballots

Nomination day yielded three candidates in each local constituency for the June 26 election. In Birtle Russell the likely names are Braendle John Liberal Graham Harry Conservative Kostesky Don NDP and in Roblin Kawchuk Mike NDP McKenzie Wally Conservative Mitchell Jack Liberal.

PCs Nominate Harry Graham for Birtle Russell Seat

Harry Graham, MLA, was nominated again as PC standard bearer for the June 25 provincial election in Birtle Russell. A June 4 meeting at Rossburn Town Hall, attended by about 200, featured Reeve Bert Thompson moving the nomination and Reg Lisseman as guest speaker. Ted Dupont of St Lazare chaired, with Graham introducing Lisseman.

Kostesky Wins NDP Nomination in Rossburn

Don Kostesky 22, a Rossburn farmer, won the NDP nomination at a June 5 convention in Rossburn, defeating Mike Antonation of Shoal Lake. Kostesky criticized the Conservative government and promised Medicare funded from general revenues and an agricultural policy to aid farmers. Gus Bork supported Kostesky as organizer for the upcoming section.

Yellowhead Highway Route Marker Proposed by Alberta

Design chosen by Alberta highways department features evergreen scenery and the Yellowhead name. The sign marks the Yellowhead Route through the province and may bear the route number. The Yellowhead Route Association hopes adoption across four provinces to honor travel history.

Roblin Constituency Faces Two Ex-Legislature Members

In Roblin a by election set for June 25 pits NDP candidate Mike Kawchuk against Progressive Conservative Wally McKenzie. Kawchuk, chosen after the riding absorbed most of its area, condemned the Weir administration for dissolving the 28th Legislature and causing four bills to die.

Advance Poll Opens June 19 for Three-Day Local Election

Electors will vote over three days in various polling places across the Seeres area from June 19 to June 21. Polling hours are 1 pm to 10 pm with June 25 election day hours set. Hepworth urges voters to note changes in poll boundaries as Birtle Russell maintains a larger area but fewer polls, dropping from 35 to 30 standard polls.

Beef Price Rise Not All Gravy For Producers

Cattle producers acknowledge an 8 to 6 per pound rise in live cattle prices and a 20 percent increase, the first since 1952. The Canadian Cattlemen’s Association notes the price shift reflects supply and demand, while wage gains since 1949 make beef more affordable for urban buyers. Tim Lee of the Millwood 4-H Beet Club won the Russell Agriculture contest in Swan River on May 28. Marilyn Ives of the Binsfarth 4H Home Ec Club finished runner up district wide and competed inter-district. Tim Lee will represent the district at the 1969 CJGX Inter-Provincial Public Speaking event in Yorkton on June 14.
