Homemade round bale feeders prove best at Manitoba trial
Four large round bale feeders were tested at the Manitoba Department of Agriculture Grassland Project near Teulon. The top two were homemade collapsible wooden feeders with the tombstone type best for cattle access and cleaning. Costs ranged from about 140 to 160 for the slanted bar version and 60 for an electric fenceline model, while a commercial round slant bar feeder cost about 185 with higher waste. The study, conducted last winter with twenty cattle per feeder on concrete pads, showed waste averages from 19 to 31 percent. Plans for the homemade feeders are available through local agricultural offices.
