Elks Celebrate Tenth Anniversary With Dance and Prize Winners

Elks fete marked their tenth anniversary with about 120 members and guests in attendance. A brief program included speeches by W. W. Wilson, Miss M. Houck, Miss June Hughes, T. Lamb, Hugh Finlay and Mrs. D. R. McDougald. Whist prize winners were Miss Nora Coultis, Miss E. McLennan, Franklin Matheson and Frank Good. Lunch followed by a Russel orchestra dance ended the event.

Tax Rate Lowered Two Mills In Russell Council Action

A two mill tax reduction was approved by the Russell town council at a recent meeting. For 1957 the rate is set at 36 mills with totals including school 7000 dollars municipal commissioner 434.85 debenture principal 808.01 and debenture interest 238.15 plus 8260 for general purposes. The assessment is 13,850. The business tax remains at 10 percent on assessments. H. Clee appointed town assessor with remuneration 125 dollars. Binscarth Wins Inter-High School Hockey Trophy

Country doctors attend three day post graduate course

A three day postgraduate course in obstetrics and gynecology opened at the Manitoba college Winnipes on Wednesday last week for country practitioners from the prairie provinces. Organized by the University of Manitoba medical faculty, the course aims to bring latest developments to rural doctors. thirty doctors registered.

A Winnipeg area short course closed with poultry judging awards and the formation of a Beekeepers Cooperative. R H Pritchard of Angusville won top poultry prize, with Laurie G. Horse Thief Sentenced To Penitentiary In Saskatchewan Case

Harry F. Jones alias W. Reid pled guilty to two counts of horse theft and was sentenced to two years in Stony Mountain penitentiary by Magistrate Reid in police court here Tuesday evening. He admitted stealing teams from C Cusitar and Cleveland Kea farms west of Russell in early November and disposed of the horses at Wawots Sask. Jones, 46, is serving a Regina jail term for forgery and will be transferred after completion. He has a long record of western prison terms since 1925 and was once a successful farmer in southern Saskatchewan with an estimated worth near 90,000.
