Service Clubs Present Sweaters to Pee Wee Hockey Players
A Friday ceremony at Memorial rink saw about 35 Saltcoats Rusell Intermediates boys receive brand new sweaters donated by local Canadian Legion Elks and Kiwanis clubs. The gifts were presented by Pix Meadows Roy Kennedy and Harold Clement as part of a program to support younger players aged 8 to 13 who could not join organized hockey.

Silver Beach Electrification Plans Open to Cottage Owners
The Manitoba Power Commission will electrify Silver Beach this year. Cottage owners must apply early via J. E. McCulloch, Hydro supervisor in Russell. Three service levels offer up to 1000, 2000, or 3300 watts with monthly bills of 3, 4, or 5 dollars respectively. Minimum three months, extensions bi monthly.

Synod Elects Norris Bishop at Brandon Pro Cathedral
Norris Bishop Elected on First Ballot at St Matthew's Pro-cathedral Brandon. Born in England and educated in Winnipeg Norris served as priest in Russell Neepawa and Brandon before war chaplaincy in RCAF later returning to Brandon and marrying Madelaine Thomas in 1930 at St Matthew's.

Legion Bonspiel Draws Twenty Six Rinks
The Russell Curling Club hosted a one day bonspiel sponsored by the local Canadian Legion. Twenty six rinks competed across two events with ten local teams and visitors from Binscarth Birtle Rossburn Angusville Rob from Foxwarren and Endcliffe.

Sudden Deaths Felt Locally in Roblin and Somerset
Over the past week the district mourns the deaths of Thos A Yeo of Roblin and Herb Bowley, and Mrs Helen Walker of Somerset. Yeo died of a heart attack while watching a bonspiel in Roblin. Bowley, a longtime newspaperman who founded The Binscorth Express The Roblin Review and The Rossburn Review, passed away as his health declined. Walker had lived in Russell for years after coming there as a bride to join Jos Walker, Royal Bank accountant.

Leaders Institute Voted A Success
The Leadership Institute held in Russell last week concluded Friday after a five day session run by the Division of Physical Fitness of the Department of Health and Public Welfare. George Senyk opened with notes on leadership development, stressing that leaders are made not born. Students engaged in lectures demonstrations films and practical activities including games crafts and social events. Over thirty registered and participants praised the program and hoped for a return next year.
