Russell advances to meet Minotonas in the second round of the Provincial Intermediate B Playdowns. First game in Minitonas Wednesday Feb 16 with a return in Memorial rink Saturday Feb 19. The winner faces The Pas next. Russell won 18-7 and 10-3 in two-game series at Swan River, with Lorne Kilburn back in forward line and several players returning from injury. Nearly 600 fans attended as Russell strengthens lineup for remaining league and playoff games.

On the Airwaves Russell Radio Portrait Series

The Town of Russell will be featured on a Winnipeg Brandon and Dauphin broadcast at 7:30 pm on Wednesday February 16 as part of Portrait of a Province. Sponsored by the Manitoba Power Commission, the series runs weekly until April, pairing music with portraits of principal communities and province wide features.

Scouts Shovel Snow Then Bowl Free at Russell Bowling

Scouts gathered a week ago Saturday to clear snow from sidewalks near the Masonic hall and sweep icy streets. Afterward they enjoyed two complimentary games of bowling at the Russell Bowling Alleys, with Terry Waddell and Donald Wil helping lead the activity.

Routine Business Discussed At Ladies Auxiliary Meet

Thirteen members of Lager Auxiliary to the Legion met Tuesday evening to discuss routine business. Mrs J McCulloch presided and Miss Beth Naylor gave her annual treasurer's report. Members received convention details for Flin Flon in June. Mrs McCulloch reported for visiting committee on behalf of Mrs Goodmanson. visitors for the month were Mrs M Shaw and Mrs EB Rea. A discussion on the Legion Auxiliary scholarship award occurred. Mrs Graham won the draw.

Classroom Banner Honors Attendance Leaders

A monthly banner will honor the class with the highest Home and School Association meeting attendance. Miss Hofdahl's room won January with 28 percent. Mr Hamilton's room placed second. February 22 will feature a discussion on what the home expects of the school followed by a film on child behavior. The public is welcome.

RCMP distributed Crime In Your Commit booklets to every business in the district as part of a nationwide effort to enlist public aid in crime prevention. The foreword argues crime imposes human and financial costs and that much crime is preventable through practical measures for storekeepers and others.

Avalon Theatre Installs 26 Foot Cinemascope Screen

Managers of the Avalon theatre in Russell installed a new 26 foot wide Cinemascope screen to show Cinemascope pictures. Messrs Magnowski and Ashey have run the Russell theatre business since August 1952.

Ice Fantasy of '55 comes to Foxwarren Friday

Foxwarren arena hosts Ice Fantasy of 1955 on Friday February 11 featuring 24 acts and strong comedy. Stars include Lorrie Ferking, Pacific niece of Chas McFarlane, with thrilling skating and lavish costumes in a major Canadian ice show.

4-H Essay Competition Awards Announced

Harvey Kingdon of Binscarth wins second place in a national 4-H essay contest sponsored by the Canadian Council of 4-H Clubs. One hundred sixteen provincial winners attended the 1954 National 4-H Club week. Miss Shirley Brown of Newfoundland won first. Prizes are books. Harvey has seven years in 4-H Clubs at Binscarth.

Shoes Worn Out and Unemployed Gain New Aid

The unemployed receiving unemployment insurance in Canada are to receive additional sums under a new law passed early in the session. All parties touted the measure to reassure voters their support remains. In a major city, traffic control required two policemen amid severe parking strain as the issue implied many rely on cars to obtain benefits rather than purchasing shoes.

Contestant Fails to See Spot on Whatzit Quiz

A Russell challenger struggled on The Winnipeg Gribune Whatzit program Monday night while Miss Margaret Werbowski could not distinguish the spot. Prize money was increased on Tuesday after a contestant called the object a hole in the top of a salt shaker.

Effect of Crusade Shown at Services Knox United Church

Congregation attendance during February's first service of the Church Attendance Crusade grew sharply. A guest book was presented by the Young Women's Club, 225 visitation calls were reported, and several children were christened. The choir sang The Little White Church, and a telegraph from Manitoba Conference offered prayers and encouragement. Evening service attendance more than doubled the yearly average. The sermon centered on The Compassion of Jesus. Sunday School attendance also rose noticeably.
