The Russell Banner announces its Volume Eighty Two writing contest with entries about Christmas. Under 18 first prize goes to Mary-Ann Kreshewski of Rossburn and second to Laura Lou Cicierski of Russell. Adult winner is Linda C. Jones of Inglis with second to Marie.
The RM of Russell council met on December 14 at 10 00 am with minutes approved and a lengthy debate on a ratepayers meeting about rising education costs. They will discuss ideas further at the January meeting and note a budget letter from the Minister of Agriculture. The council also reviewed a recreation grant for the Russell Curling Club and announced office closure December 28 29 with a next meeting January 1th.
Yorkton store owners remain split over the six day shopping law passed by the city council the vote 4 to 3 after a year of operation. Opponents cite slow sales and higher costs while supporters note some maintained sales and business levels despite recession. Mayor Aytrykush defends continuing the policy as essential for a progressive community.
The December Pelly Trail Education Award was presented to the Rossburn Nursery School executives for founding and sustaining the facility since 1976. The award recognizes fundraising efforts and non governmental support that keep the preschool well equipped and staffed.
Highways and Transportation Minister Samuel Askin announced Dec 1 the establishment of a single ride overweight permit system in Manitoba. A fee of 14 cents per 1000 kilograms applies for each diameter, replacing long term refundable permits. Truckers can obtain permits quickly at motor vehicle branches, ending burdensome weight-change refunds and delays.
Pelly Trail School Board held a regular meeting December 20 at 1 20 p m with trustee Furman absent A motion to deny a third trustee for the Russell area passed 8 to 1 A committee from the board expected to meet with the Minister of Education in January to discuss Indian student losses and bus regulations were revised with plans for a July 83 implementation on new bus rules and a September 1 88 bus wage increase The board also reviewed a MAS T representative appointment budget and insurance bids and set next meeting for January 10 at 1 00 p m
