Russell Dominates Yorkton In Season Opener

Russell Intermediates rout Yorkton 6 to 2 to open the 1956-56 hockey season. Red Patterson scored early, Winjack and Scobie followed as Russell pulled away in the third period while Yorkton drew penalties. Bob Thom and Bill Patterson led the final charge.

Ward honored by M I S employees after four decades service

Ward completed 42 years with Manitoba Telephone System and retired October 1 after an accident on July 2. A farewell at Central Hotel Russell featured gifts from the company and fellow workers, including a gold wrist watch, a purse, and a club bag. He was born April 1890 in Rolla North Dakota and moved to Gladstone Manitoba before joining M T S in 1913.

Arthur Willis of sinsearth served as installing officer Tuesday night as the 1956 Russell Branch Canadian Legion officers took office. Clare Basler Dies In Winnipeg At Sixty

Clare Basler a Canadian Pacific Railway agent at Russell for three years died Sunday at Winnipeg General Hospital at age 60 after asthma and chest ailments. Funeral held at Rapid City with Rev. Zwicker. burial in Rapid City cemetery. Basler born at Rapid City served in WWI, member of Canadian Legion and Masons. survived by widow Mary Crawford and four brothers.

Christmas Program Highlights Women Institute Meeting

The Women’s Institute held its regular meeting on Saturday December 3 in the Rest Room with 18 members and six visitors. Officers were installed by Mrs J Silver past president including honorary president Mrs Meadows president Mrs T Cairns and others. A book review of Dickens Christmas Carol and a display of handwork by Mrs W W Wilson followed. The rink board report and resolution committee were noted and retiring president Mrs J Silver praised for 1995 work.

Santa Arrives for Christmas Tree Concert at School

The annual Christmas tree concert sponsored by the Elks and organized by school children will take place Wednesday December 21 with Santa Claus visiting in the afternoon and evening. The Ladies Auxiliary to the Legion asks shoppers to donate to veterans in hospitals by placing gifts in collection boxes at local businesses.
