Hamiota informed the executive of the Intermediate Hockey club they cannot visit Russell for the first league fixture. To fill the date for fans, the Brandon Anglos will play an exhibition game. Game time is 8:00 Saturday night.
Russell Intermediates rout Yorkton 6 to 2 to open the 1956-56 hockey season. Red Patterson scored early, Winjack and Scobie followed as Russell pulled away in the third period while Yorkton drew penalties. Bob Thom and Bill Patterson led the final charge.
Government urges tagging of big game carcasses with shipping coupons as required by the Game and Fisheries Act. Minister C E Greenlay notes tagging is simple to do and warns that failure is a common offence among hunters.
At the Russell Agricultural Society annual meeting the Senate named life membership certificates for N. A. Robertson J. H. McLenlan R. A. Stevens and Watson Dunn amid praise for longtime service. Julius Kieper remembered with a minute of silence as Frank Jones led plans for the 75th anniversary in 1986 and a slate of officers was elected.
Gayland Shows Limited general agent E Tiny Nicholls returned to Russell over the weekend to renew the contract supplying midway entertainment for the 1966 fair.
Dr. Frank L. Skinner of Skinner's Nursery Dropmore will speak to the Plant Propagators Society in Cleveland Ohio on December 14. He is a sought after horticultural speaker and is expected to leave an informative message for attendees at the gathering.
Russell 4H Grain club met in the Elks hall to select Garry oats as its 1956 project. Seven members and three visitors attended with Bruce Mintenko as president. Ag Rep Keith McComb spoke on registered seed and distributed fall fair test papers.
Ward completed 42 years with Manitoba Telephone System and retired October 1 after an accident on July 2. A farewell at Central Hotel Russell featured gifts from the company and fellow workers, including a gold wrist watch, a purse, and a club bag. He was born April 1890 in Rolla North Dakota and moved to Gladstone Manitoba before joining M T S in 1913.
Arthur Willis of sinsearth served as installing officer Tuesday night as the 1956 Russell Branch Canadian Legion officers took office. New roles include President Jack Shipp, vice presidents Ted Yankoski and Ralph Robinson, secretary treasurer Mrs Barrie Hainstock, sergeant at arms Bob Smellie Jr, cadre Rev W G Zwicker, executive Jim McCulloch Fred Poole Bernard Greaves Mrs Bess Loney and Bob McMurray as past president. Ted Langford named Legion representative on Russell Athletic Council.

Clare Basler a Canadian Pacific Railway agent at Russell for three years died Sunday at Winnipeg General Hospital at age 60 after asthma and chest ailments. Funeral held at Rapid City with Rev. Zwicker. burial in Rapid City cemetery. Basler born at Rapid City served in WWI, member of Canadian Legion and Masons. survived by widow Mary Crawford and four brothers.
The Women’s Institute held its regular meeting on Saturday December 3 in the Rest Room with 18 members and six visitors. Officers were installed by Mrs J Silver past president including honorary president Mrs Meadows president Mrs T Cairns and others. A book review of Dickens Christmas Carol and a display of handwork by Mrs W W Wilson followed. The rink board report and resolution committee were noted and retiring president Mrs J Silver praised for 1995 work.
The annual Christmas tree concert sponsored by the Elks and organized by school children will take place Wednesday December 21 with Santa Claus visiting in the afternoon and evening. The Ladies Auxiliary to the Legion asks shoppers to donate to veterans in hospitals by placing gifts in collection boxes at local businesses.
A district farmer misplaced a wallet on Russell's main thoroughfare last Friday. It contained a considerable amount of money and the owner's identification. The notice appeals to the finder to return the wallet and consider the owner's distress.
Mrs. Stan Jackson of Inglis won $14.90 from a ten cent ticket in the Chamber of Commerce Saturday night draw. Russell Collegiate students plan a town canvass for magazine subscriptions under Student Council President Glen Berg to fund year activities. Eric Christmas and Anna Reiser bring a Kiwanis show to Community Hall with curtain at 8 pm and life saving certificates to summer swimmers at intermission. Russell Women's Institute donates $10 to Russell school library for Grade II books. United Church Women print Memo Calendars offered for sale to help remember special dates next year.
A correction notes Bill Kieper took his deer on the first day while Bob Nickel may have bagged his, and Joe Semochko's eagle was six and a half feet across a valley last week. Real-IgGle Al Capp comparisons are dismissed.
The gathering featured hostess Mrs. C. Hertlein and Mrs. J. Kieper along with Mrs. Jackson serving a pleasant luncheon. The meeting adjourned after the group sang "The Queen."
