Irrigation Sulphur Use Questioned by Canadian Expert
Plant nutritionist Dr. Jim Bole at Agriculture Canada's Lethbridge station says western Canadian irrigation water often supplies enough sulphur for crops. Studies show growers apply two to five times the harvested S, and irrigation water can deliver 8 kg S per hectare per 10 cm, with drainage or stored water adding 25 to 60 kg S per hectare per irrigation. Grasses and cereals typically need about half the sulphur of corn, beets, alfalfa and potatoes.
