Manitoba Bill 77 targets local school control and tenure

Manitoba trustees and superintendents oppose Bill 77 which would allow instant arbitration of experienced teachers across divisions after one year and a day. They warn it undermines local evaluation, notes special teacher status since 1958, and risks lowering teaching quality while forcing boards to absorb cross division staffing disputes. They urged public pressure before the legislature acts.

Russell Town Council Grants and Meetings Report

The Russell Town Council held its regular meeting on a Thursday evening. Councillor Lynn Spurway was absent. A grant list shows allocations to several groups including Marquette Festival Assoc, Russell Agricultural Society, Huse Chamber, Library, Salvation Army and others. A request to take over town water and sewer work was discussed with no decision. A $25 000 grant was approved to cover 80 percent of a Manitoba Avenue paving project but the council postponed the work. The note references education board debates and ministerial education policy.

Liquor and beer prices set to rise in September

Prices on liquor and beer will increase 13 percent starting September 1 due to higher federal excise taxes and producer costs. Domestic wineries cut some prices, while Canadian spirits may rise 7 to 12 percent and imported spirits about 90 cents per bottle. Manitoba beer prices also increase per dozen.

Binscarth Knox United Church 100th Anniversary Observed

Binscarth Knox United Church marked its centennial with a two day program featuring local talent and a Sunday worship service led by Rev. Oliver Hodge. The drive to fund a major renovation reached about $35,000 as roof steeple insulation and a rear addition were completed. The church traces back to 1925 joining the United Church of Canada after 1922 union of Presbyterian and Methodist congregations.

Russell RM approves garbage dumps after survey

The Russell RM council held its August meeting with members Schepp Collins Mather and Ireland present. They reviewed minutes and finances and discussed a referendum on bilingualism, recycling chemical cans, and whether the province would collect used rinse water. A survey by Pesticides Container Disposals found all three dumps acceptable. The next meeting is September 13 at 9:00 a.m.

$2.5 Million Manitoba Tower To Boost Western Signals

Western Manitoba Broadcasters plans a 2.5 million dollar 412 meter tower at Hayfield near Brandon. Tower by Lebiance Towers of Toronto to raise CKX TV CRV CKX FM CBC AM FM French and FM Stereo signals. Expected operational date November 18 1983. temporary tower in use since March.
