Gregg to lead Salvation Army fund drive locally

E R Gregg Sr will serve as campaign chairman for the Salvation Army drive set to begin next Tuesday afternoon. Mrs Paul Cox and her committee mapped details, with seven captains coordinating four workers each to limit visits. Funds are exhausted and aid has been provided by State Headquarters. The local unit, organized a year ago, aims to give swift help for food medicine shoes or clothing and this year sent two boys to the Salvation Army boys camp.

Public viewing set for Elliott all gas home in Reklaw area

The eight room all gas home built by Mr. and Mrs. A E Elliott will be open for public viewing Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 6 pm. The United Gas Corporation features the home on Reklaw Highway north of Henderson Street with ArxlaServer gas air conditioner Universal built in gas oven and top burner units RCA Whirlpool icemaker fridge and other gas appliances. The Elliott move in early next week after finish touches and carpet work.

Commodities to be Issued at Rusk Courthouse Square

Food USDA commodities will be issued on September 14 and 15 on the east side of the courthouse square in Rusk with alphabetic distribution. On Wednesday A K and on Thursday L Z will receive allocations.

City considers parallel street parking plan amendment

City Councilmen favor an informal plan by the State Highway Department to substitute parallel parking on side and approach streets while keeping angle parking on the square. Highway officials said the state will cooperate in implementing the change.

Juniors Have 40 Hopefuls Football Tag Draw

Forty junior high candidates drew football tags this week and began workouts under coach Bruce Pruitt. The seventh and eighth graders open September 15 at home against Crockett with two games. The five game schedule includes matches on October 6 13 and 27 against Grapeland and Crockett with varying start times for seventh and eighth grades.

Rusk Considers Traffic Plan Changes At City Council

About 4,000 labor survey forms were distributed by the Rusk Chamber of Commerce to gather data for industry prospects. City council discussed traffic plan alterations including eliminating 14 square parking spaces to allow parallel parking, with state support possible for partial implementation.

Tickets for the Rusk New London football game are on sale at the Rusk Hotel. Superintendent G B Chapman announced reserved seats cost 1.00 while general admission is 0.75 and 0.25 for different sections.

Sister of Localite Dies in Lufkin Wreck

The sister of Mrs. Frank Schmidt of Rusk perished in a two car collision at Lufkin on Saturday that killed six. Also dead were P A Van DeGaer Jr and his eight year old Nederland girl, Mr. and Mrs. J M Cates of Kerens, their nurse Anna Charlene Bowin, and the Van DeGaers’ young child. State police said a car attempting to pass a truck struck head on with the other vehicle.
