Texas state budget hearings begin as agencies estimate 1966 67 needs
State officials led by Governor Connally and the Legislative Budget Board begin a summer budget hearing season with over 150 state agencies to project operating needs for the 1966-67 biennium. Items include a 37 percent rise for state hospitals and special schools, corrections pay raises, and study proposals for higher education, teacher pay, and a new osteopathic college. Auto thefts in Texas top 17 400 annually with 9 percent unfound. Salvage yard plates and papers now must be secured. Building activity remains strong with April filings at 153 6 million dollars, the second largest month in Texas history.
