In Rusk area news, the big horse race between Ed Stover and Roundabout intensifies after a trade. Roundabout’s new runner wins at the Athens Horse Show, while Roundabout plans to race soon. Don Crysop and Bill Vining recover in hospitals as Trades Way and Cantyon Style sales loom.
School board members will meet with architects this Thursday to continue reviewing bids received on Tuesday June 20 for a new high school. The $800000 bond funded facilities include classrooms library lecture rooms science lab and homemaking department.
The Yankees top the local Junior League baseball standings with six wins and one loss. Red Sox sit second at four and two, Braves four and three, Cardinals three and three, Indians three and four, Giants winless at zero and six. Since last week six games were played pushing near the league midway. On Thursday June 22 the Red Sox beat the Giants 9 to 4 with Jackie Foster credited as pitcher.
Four criminal cases filled the County Clerk’s docket since June 20 with Jessie Street pleading guilty to theft and receiving 10 days jail and a $25 fine plus costs. Ernest Pryor faces OWI, D. W. Wood charged with aggravated assault, Joe Jenkins with DWI, while a sports section recalls a Yankees Braves game 5-0 and pitcher wins. The June 23 double header featured the Indians over the Giants 9-6 with Tidrow as winner. the Braves beat the Cardinals 9-8 as Peters and Allen starred. June 26 saw the Yankees beat the Red Sox 5-1 with Watson winning. A school building project is outlined with gym, cafeteria, and classrooms in scope, with Ed Dickey noting bids were higher than expected. Jim Roach of Rusk hit a hole-in-one at Hilltop CC in Troup, earning equipment.

Merchants including Beall's Piggly Wiggly Sears and more offer bargains while buyers from Alexandria Louisiana and locals bring items for sale.
At the Richmond Rosenburg twirling festival Gail Fisher Cinda Philbrick Cathy Richards Deborah Chapman Linda Jones Sharon Grimes and Jeanne Duncan won trophies for performances. Deborah’s military solo was judged best at the SFA twirling camp and Sharon’s group dance twirl also earned top honors at the SPA camp. Cinda and Susan Holcomb scored high at the SFA school of instruction in Nacogdoches.
Memorial Missionary Baptist Church on Rider Road near Crockett Street hosts a summer revival starting next Sunday July 2. Guest evangelist is Rev Dan Griffith of Unity Missionary Baptist Church Clute. Services at 10 a m and 7 30 p m directed by E L Wallace with daily 9 30 a m devotionals on KTLA 1580. Rev Carroll Jones of Rusk invites the public to attend all revival services.
Rotarians invite the public to a fish fry this Saturday at Fellowship Hall First Methodist Church. Fresh catfish is the star with tickets two dollars for adults and one twenty five for children under twelve. Proceeds fund club activities including support for Boys State participant Charles Dear.
At a board meet ASCS officials are praised for long tenure. Maness, known in the 1930s as a reporter for the Triple A era, measured crop acreage and kept records for the government service office, marking the beginnings of the farm subsidy program.
An annual Texas Mid Continent Oil & Gas Association study finds Cherokee County contributed over 2 million dollars to the economy from oil and gas in 1965. The report notes production values for crude oil, natural gas, and liquids, plus royalties totaling over 255 thousand dollars and taxes to the State Treasury of about 107 thousand dollars.
