The Farmers Home Administration approved a 58000 loan to New Concord Water Supply Corporation for a water system serving 51 rural families in Cherokee County. The telegram from Senator Ralph W. Yarborough was received in The Cherokee office Tuesday afternoon.
Lionel Newman is resting well after surgery to remove a bullet from a shooting near his home in Maydelle Tuesday afternoon. June Robert Bailey is free on $2,500 bail in connection with the incident.
Cherkee County highway officials say two road improvement projects are near completion with three additional contracts to be let in July. FM 346 is in final stages and should finish by mid July with sod work and a one course asphalt surface soon. U S 69 south of Alto is over 90 percent complete with seven miles under construction.
Attendance at the local swimming pool remains strong during the fifth week of the 6S season with lessons underway and more to start on July 5. Rusk contractors from Bryan move in for Highway 84 right of way work toward Maydelle as paving crews prepare for road improvements on Highway 69 and Main Street.
The Cherokee County Soil Conservation District held its annual Awards Banquet at First Methodist Church Fellowship Hall with about 200 attendees. Winners included W F Kee reclamation farmer of the year, Melvin Sessions farm forestry, and multiple zone conservation farmers, plus homemaker Mrs H D Rogers. FFA teams from Rusk Jacksonville Alto and New Summerfield earned awards in land judging and woodland judging contests.
About 100 guests—employees, former staff, and guests—attend the Texas Public Employees Association Chapter 19 homecoming in the AIT Dining Room at Rusk State Hospital. Dr Albert Sunday, sociology professor and former hospital employee, is the guest speaker.
Governor Connally signed an appropriations bill boosting public employees pay at Rusk State Hospital by at least 3.4 percent effective October 1 for the work period beginning September 1. The increase brings annual payroll to about $2.6 million with potential additional gains if all positions are filled, and removes the merit system to set uniform minimums and raise competitiveness.
Rusk Police Chief Dick Crippen announced tickets will be issued if local youths ignore state laws on motor scooters. Operators must be at least 14 with a driver license and scooters licensed by the Texas Highway Patrol. Scooters need inspection stickers and proper mufflers headlights and tail lights. Crippen has spoken to about 20 locals and their parents and warned of enforcement action if violations continue.
