Hatchett's Inn Landmark Built Under Aston's Lease
The historic Hatchett's Inn at Hatchett's Ferry in Cherokee County reflects mid-19th century life. John Aston built the inn after leasing Angelina River ferry rights from David Rusk between 1847 and 1850 to prevent nocturnal misconduct among guests. The structure, now derelict, features two upstairs rooms accessible by separate stairways from lower rooms, a feature tied to Aston's aims. The Cherokee County Historical Association hopes to restore the building, which formerly served as a stagecoach inn under Hubb ard G. Hatchett and later his son Washington Hatchett, continuing its legacy on the Old San Antonio Road.
