Local briefs report fairs dates and preparations, church revivals and community events across Rush County. Highlights include school term plans, road and transport notices, temperance meetings, and social visits. scattered notes mention births, marriages, and local business changes.
Thomas M Gardner of Hancock county toured Rushville last Saturday. He tested the idea that wine is a mocker and found his faculties impaired before a marshal and Squire Beachbard. The narrative then shifts to Clifton Hill, Thomas Meredith’s country seat near Rossville, praised for hospitality and a memorable evening with Sheriff Carney featuring supper croquet and moonlit music.
The Murdoch Reading Club meets Friday evening August 31 at A. G. Mauzy's residence. The program includes Miss Minnie Mauzy, Miss Hannah Cullen, Miss Kate Pugh, Miss Nume citations and performances by Miss Graham and Miss Bussie Thomezon. An unusual church event followed.
The Old Settlers Meeting gathered a large county-wide crowd despite threatening morning skies. Dr. Ryland T. Brown of Indianapolis spoke on Rushville’s growth from 1821, noting steam navigation and mechanization, before rain forced adjournment.
A horse stolen near Fayetteville was sold to David Rhodes at Shively's Corner in Centre township for 20 dollars and three shots. The thief, who gave the name Andrew Spencer Dawson, confessed to Town Marshal Gregg and was jailed after the owner recovered the horse. Dawson claimed to be from near Laurel, Franklin county, and said the theft was his first offense.
Rush County residents are urged to form a society to collect preserve and display county history. The piece warns that many letters documents newspapers and memories are at risk from decay neglect and death and calls for urgent action and discussion in the Republican columns.
The August 13 meeting led by President J. P. Guffin approved minutes and continued committees on Greatarm bell and room for hook and ladder gear. Officials approved culvert, stationery, stone, fire bucket, and freight payments and awarded Morgan street works to Thomas Geraghty for 874.00, due by November 1. A sidewalk committee was named with church talks pending. Adjournment was by call of the President.
The Rush county fair opens September 11 with strong stock and department exhibits. Secretary Link reports unusually good prospects and many stall applications while Gosnel's "Bay Sallie" won top prize at Ripley county fair last week. The colored festival drew solid attendance and was reportedly successful.
Mrs Elisa Scott Caskey wife of John Caskey died at her parents home John and Sarah Scott Richland township Rush shanty August 9 1877 born September 21 1851. She faced death with Christian faith and devotion. Funeral services were led by Dr James P Orr as family and friends mourned in a community that offered sympathy.
Obituary notice from Hatt or Milroy LOPEx No 139 acknowledging the death of James N Carr on August 6 and his burial at Milroy Cemetery. It commends Carr as an honest citizen and valued member of the Masonic order and extends sympathy to his family. The committee presents resolutions and a copy for publication.
