President Clinton signed legislation Thursday permitting banks to establish branches across state lines, shifting banking competition and expansion rules. The move could reshape regional finance as banks seek wider networks and customers.
About 75 residents filled the Roswell Inn Rio Grande Room to share ideas with a seven member panel including Mayor Tom Jennings and County Manager Hubert Quintana. Topics covered included attracting new business, keeping educated youth, potential state prison jobs, a veteran hospital idea, neighborhood development, housing rehab, and beautification to boost community pride.
Roswell hosts the second annual Chile and Cheese Festival on Saturday with 9 a.m. bus tours from the Chaves County Courthouse lawn to local chile fields and dairy facilities. An estimated 5,000 to 10,000 visitors are expected, featuring workshops, live entertainment, and a Red Chili Cookoff with a $200 prize.

McMillan contends he did not take subsidies this year because he is not growing cotton.
