Goddard High School hosts a homecoming Friday with a post game reception for alumni at Roswell Inn. Faculty will serve as hosts. The event celebrates the 1965 opening and six graduating classes, with potential extra happiness if the football team wins.
In Washington, Sen Clinton Anderson joined the majority to keep Navy F14 funds but then sided with the minority to block deployment and construction of the Safeguard missile system as the 64 to 21 vote favored sustaining the program. Montoya did not vote on either issue. In Berkeley a 6.0 quake hit with epicenter 1,200 miles southeast. El Paso Electric Co. president E R Lockhart died at 59 after brief illness. Pentagon issues a 10,000 man quarterly draft call for the year.
Secretary Connally told the IMF meeting the United States could drop its 10 percent import surcharge if other governments reduce trade barriers and allow realistic currency exchange rates. He rejected direct dollar devaluation in gold terms and warned against steps that prolong gold in monetary policy.
Ginger, one of the largest hurricanes on record, struck North Carolina causing widespread damage to utilities and property. By 11 a.m. the Red Cross reported about 2,500 in 15 shelters, with evacuations across coastal islands. Winds up to 90 mph lashed Morehead City area as the storm moved inland toward Rocky Mount.
Bill Armstrong of the Roswell Chamber of Development and Commerce announced Jerry Smith, president of Smith Machinery Co., as chairman of the 1971 Wool Bowl Football Classic. Smith has served on the Wool Bowl Committee four years and will help finalize assignments for the October meeting. parade pageant fireworks and top junior college teams are planned.
Meade Kansas story notes Clark Bird again delayed in decorating Sunrise Plaza for Christmas. After a three day Colorado trip the Bird home remained unlit while 11 of 12 houses twinkled. Neighbors say Bird must now assume Santa Claus duties.
Price, owner of Cecil's Restaurant site at 2103 N. Main, was fined 100 dollars in Municipal Court for a public nuisance hazard. Judge Webb suspended the fine for 60 days, warning a daily penalty could follow if the building is not addressed. The case drew editorials from the Roswell Daily Record and included testimony from city officials and environmental witnesses about the site’s safety risks.
William W. Campbell announces results of the Roswell district advisory board election. Re-elected cattlemen include Boyle in Roswell and Johnson Jr. in Carlsbad. McNally Jr. and Snipes are re-elected for Roswell sheepmen. Other members include Donald Martin, David McGee, Hart Greenwood Jr., Mark Smith, Hugh Kincaid, Lloyd Treat, and N Wallace Wilson. The board advises on Taylor Grazing Act rules and range capacity for about 275 million acres in Chaves, Eddy, DeBaca, Lea, Lincoln, Otero, and Roosevelt counties.
Pope Paul VI opened the third World Synod of Bishops concelebrating Mass in the Sistine Chapel joined by Cardinal Mindszenty. Delegates will discuss priestly celibacy, social justice, and the church role in politics and marriages.
