Pope John Paul I Dies After Short Pontificate
Vatican announced that Pope John Paul I died of an acute myocardial infarction in his sleep at about 11 p.m. The 65 year old pope had reigned only 34 days since his election. His body lay in state in Clementine Hall as crowds paid respects and officials described his death with solemn compassion.
