Carl Johnson's long running parade entry, a Model T with two radiators two hoods and two steering wheels faced opposite directions and uneven wheels, loomed as a quirky fixture in the Eastern New Mexico State Fair parade. The town noted parade day sweater weather and reports of wildlife sightings near the highway with a deer encounter caution.
President Nixon commends the 6th Fleet as indispensable for peace during a conference aboard the USS Springfield after transferring from the Saratoga. He salutes naval forces and notes it is too early to gauge Nasser's death impact on Middle East events. Cairo reports mass grieving as Nasser lies in state and a state funeral is planned.
Arab heads of state and foreign officials expected to be pallbearers for Gamal Abdel Nasser. Among those named as likely successors were Tahia Nasser, Lt. Gen. Mohammed Fawzi, Aly Sabry, Hussein Shafei, and Anwar Sadat who announced the death. Nasser died of a heart attack after an Arab summit and at his Cairo residence.
California battled the largest brush fire in state history with 31 000 acres burned in Malibu Canyon destroying 99 homes including those of Angela Lansbury and Dale Robertson. Eight killed in a five day siege across six counties. Disaster area declared. 651 structures destroyed in LA and SD counties.
The Eastern New Mexico State Fair parade in Roswell featured Shriner Ed Kruse on a motor scooter and bystander praise for a juggler, amid candy colors, queens Linda Sloan and Nancy Sue Gaines, bank floats, majorettes, and numerous carnival motifs across a chilly 50s day.
The last six hijack hostages remaining in Jordan were handed to International Red Cross delegates in Amman. All captives are Americans. The Associated Press reports this pivotal transfer occurring at Red Cross headquarters.

In Albuquerque early today officer Ray Sandy was shot in the face chest and leg during a car stop tied to a robbery. He remained in serious condition with a punctured lung as five suspects were arrested, one after being wounded by another officer.
