Ithaca New York September 26 CAP A dangerous spread in northern New York of big beetles that reproduce by parthenogenesis without males was announced by Cornell University entomology. These half inch snout beetles, major crop pests in Europe, threaten millions in damage and are believed introduced from Europe via packing materials. They cannot fly but crawl with claws and sticky pads. Each unmated mother beetle yields hundreds of daughters, burrowing two feet underground to feed on roots, remaining unseen for a year before emerging to lay eggs.

More ransom money found in Hauptmann home
