Santa Barbara Brush Fire Rages Through Homes Evacuations Rise
A fast moving brush fire in Santa Barbara and Montecito forced evacuations of hundreds of homes as winds up to 45 mph fed the flames. An army of about 1000 fought the blaze with aircraft dropping retardant. officials counted 17 to 30 homes destroyed amid chaotic nighttime estimates.

Four Trapped Men Rescued At Test Site
At Mercury Nevada four men trapped for three and a half days in an 1800 foot deep test hole were rescued. The last to come up was George R. Cooper of Tucson Arizona at 8 05 am. The others were Floyd Shaw of Santa Barbara California Leland Roeder of Pioche Nevada and Art Luhnow of North Las Vegas Nevada. They were lowered supplies during the ordeal after a thick cable snapped jamming the shaft.

Two youths escaped from the Boys' Industrial School at Springer and robbed a motorist at a rest stop west of Riverside. David Lee Fabroy 16 Union City California and Harry Wayne Yorgensen Lovington are held at Carrizoso day. They were captured after a roadblock east of Tularosa following the armed robbery of France Jackson Dickens North Miami Beach Florida. Dickens was asleep in his car when the youths woke him and demanded money taking about $60. The pair fled in a car stolen from Springer and were apprehended.

State Fair Junior Beef Show Winners Named
At the New Mexico State Fair junior beef show Chaves County 4-H members earned top honors. Steve Bramlett won reserve championship for a 948 pound Aberdeen Angus. Tim Harkness of Springer captured grand champion calf with a 1 035 pound Hereford. The Cooper Brothers of Tinnie won the champion fleece and Jon Heine of Roswell took best of other breeds. All prize calves head to Friday sale. Thomas Vaughn of Estancia led the open Dorset ram and Scott Shafer of Carrizozo showed the champion Dorset ewe. Dairy cattle swine angora goats and junior sheep judged today.
