Willkie, returning to California after decades, staged a dense bay area speaking tour to rally electoral support. He defended his blunt approach to Roosevelt era policies, urging decisive action to avert bankruptcy and defend liberty.
State Democratic chairman Benjamin Luchini announces the 1940 platform committee and a 40 member advisory board to help draft the party policy. The panel will meet in Albuquerque to outline a preliminary draft with representatives from business agriculture banking and industry. Members include M. E. Noble A. M. Fernandez Hiram Dow David Carmody and Marion.
A meeting of the recently elected Trio Chest committee will be held at the Chamber of Commerce next Monday at 7 o'clock to plan the annual drive. Last year’s committee will turn over operations to the new group, which will outline drive plans. The $10,000 goal was exceeded last year, with funds benefiting the Salvation Army, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts.
Senator Charles L. McNary in Aurora outlines his critique of the New Deal agriculture program. He says farming remains financially dependent on the government, with low income per farm and large government-held surpluses. He argues the program is fragmented and fails to meet core objectives, viewing it as a chronic condition rather than a cure.
New Mexico shows partly cloudy skies with increasing afternoon clouds and possible afternoon and evening thunderstorms over higher elevations. Colorado expected to be partly cloudy with showers or mild thunderstorms in mountains and eastern foothills. West Texas sees increasing cloudiness with scattered thunderstorms in the southwest and Panhandle plus showers in the southeast. Temperatures near normal with light to moderate rainfall, heavier over New Mexico mountains later in the period. Master of Ceremonies Frank Decatur White, famed dietician and author, leads the Zink Record Cooking School at the Woman's Club on Sept 22 24 and 25 starting 2 30 PM. White returns by popular demand after prior Roswell appearances and recent Hollywood work.
Hearing on Rep. J. J. Dempsey’s suit to stop certification of Valencia county primary returns was postponed as Socorro county commissioners failed to appear. Dempsey seeks to overturn late or alleged fraudulent precincts to derail Sen. Dennis Chavez’s renomination. actions target four counties plus possible recounts in others. Bernalillo county completed its canvass, showing Dempsey down five votes from unofficial totals.
A recount of 21 districts in Roswell and Dexter left Julius Skinner ahead by five votes for county treasurer in last Saturday's primary. The canvass by county commissioners began today. Skinner lost four votes. Wilcox gained one. Five sealed ballots were added for Wilcox or Skinner, with two for Wilcox and one for Skinner among them.
In Hillsborough California on September 21 a $100,000 ransom was prepared after three year old Marc de Tristan Jr. was abducted from his nurse. Police withdrew at the parents request to avoid police interference while the ransom arrangement awaited contact through a San Francisco advertisement. The nurse Mary Foley was injured trying to intervene as the kidnapper seized the boy from a go cart and fled in a dark sedan. A partial license glimpse and the suspect’s gray hat were noted as clues.
Roberto Perez, 40, of San Pat ricio, N. M., suffered several broken ribs in an automobile accident at 5 p m yesterday. Perez was getting out of a parked car when it was struck from behind by a car driven by Tom Cardin of Portales. Cardin said a car approached from the opposite direction and he swerved to avoid a head on crash. It was raining at the time. Leopoldo Sedillo was cited to court for parking a car on the highway.
In Albuquerque on September 21 Major Herman Crile and Waldo Rogers trailed by 34 votes with 873 of 914 precincts reporting Crile 10,900 Rogers 10,866. Democratic races shifted as E P Chase defeated Filo Sedillo. Clinton Anderson led Frank Patton 21,075 to 19,899 with 900 precincts in.
Boston welcomes American Legionnaires for a three day 1940 convention with an anticipated 300000 attendees and families. Hotels are full with overflow reservations as sleeping cars and a steamship arrival assist the influx. The parade Tuesday is billed as the era’s major event amid a strong Americanism emphasis and ten candidates for national commander.
The U S Grazing Service installed a short wave radio station at the Grazing Service CCC Camp 148 N a mile west of Roswell. It allows two way talks with the Albuquerque regional office and all Grazing Service CCC camps in New Mexico as well as the Chaves side camp thirty miles north. Five of ten camps in the state already have radios with plans to equip all others. The devices can be used in case of fire to link firefighters with the camp.
A bouquet of marigolds is listed as an entry by Mrs Wallace Wilson in the City Beautiful contest. Arizona forecasts show a fair night and Sunday with afternoon and evening cloudiness in the north and east portions, with little change in temperature.
Detroit Tigers topped Cleveland Indians 5-0 behind Lynwood Schoolboy Rowe five hitter. Tigers moved two games ahead in the pennant race as Milnar started for Cleveland and both teams played in Briggs Stadium under perfect baseball weather with 40,000 spectators.
New York Yankees 5 Boston Red Sox 4 with rookie Ernie Bonham earning his seventh win. George Selkirk and Joe Gordon homered helping the champions erase a late deficit. Final score line shows Boston 4, New York 5 as the ninth inning capped the win.
Phillies 4 Dodgers 2 as Kirby Higbe limited Brooklyn to eight hits. John ny Rizzo homered in the sixth for the winners. Giants 3 Boston 1 as Gumbert and Lynn held Bees to four hits. Reds 8 Pirates 1 with Walters earning his 21st win in game one. Cubs 4 Cards 3 in 11 innings led by Olsen twirl.
Fort Bragg commander Brigadier General Francis W. Honeycutt was passenger in an observation plane reported missing after last seen over Savannah at 5 31 p m MST. A five-plane search unit scoured the Savannah to Jacksonville corridor for the craft, which also carried Captain George F Kehoe the pilot and Corporal Robert J Schnitz.
Co. C. Long pleaded guilty in police court to speeding and reckless driving and received a fine of fifteen dollars.
In J. P. Court Fideles Mendosa pleads not guilty to a charge of assaulting his wife. Trial is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday.
Manley Stricklin and Onkce Mae Taylor, both residents of Roswell, are listed in marriage license records.
Dick Callens, 28, has earned his commercial pilot license after eight years of training. He can fly passengers for hire anywhere in the United States. Final exams were conducted in Roswell by Albert Meyers of the Civil Aeronautics Bureau after a four hour written test and one hour flight test. Callens trained under Cal Barnett, Roswell Airport manager and first pupil of Barnett under the Civilian Pilot Training Program.
