Anderson Sees Farmers Key to Future of Southwest
Carlsbad industrialist rancher Robert O. Anderson told a Chamber of Commerce luncheon that the nation has lost sight of agriculture and that about two to four percent of the population feeds everyone. He urged expanding farming in southeast New Mexico and west Texas, noting the region’s water, climate, and space. He envisions large industrial complexes in sparsely populated areas with buffers of 20 000 to 30 000 acres. He faulted extremist anti development movements, saying moderation is needed, and commented on the oxygen and water cycles as part of environmental considerations.
