United Fund emphasizes a poster contest with judging on October 1 and a public reception October 2 at the Roswell Museum where 46 winners will be named from junior high and high school classes as 672 entries compete. Also, UF agency heads tour on the UF Tour Bus and weekly public tours are offered each Wednesday at 1 15 p m.
The Nixon administration extends budget cutbacks to five chronic disease research programs applying gains to patient treatment including cancer. Health and Welfare officials order drastic cuts this year and terminations next year.
President Nixon cancels all November and December draft calls and plans to spread the 29 000 October inductions over three months totaling under 10 000 monthly. He cites Vietnam troop withdrawals and reduced manpower as reasons and threatens an executive order if Congress blocks reform.
At the United Nations General Assembly Andrei Gromyko defended Hanoi's peace plans as constructive and urged the United States to renounce military interference in Vietnam. He warned the Paris talks depend on American policy and rejected a Middle East arms embargo while supporting Arab positions. No date or venue specifics were given beyond U N in New York.
Christina Gutierrez a 21 year old Roswell resident died from head and chest injuries after a pickup collided at Deming and Stanton in southeast Roswell. Diane Eisner 18 was treated for minor injuries and released. Juan Silvas 22 and Gloria Mata 38 escaped injury.
