Domestic refiners push crude throughput to record levels
Houston AP reports domestic refineries ran a record amount of crude daily in 1966 and maintained high averages into 1967 with up to 9.9 to 10 million barrels per day in recent weeks. Capacity utilization hovered near 94 percent in early August, while demand estimates from Chase Manhattan Bank and industry groups show strong growth over 1966. Exports of crude oil rose sharply after the Suez Canal closure, reversing years of product-dominant shipments abroad.
